A Book Review

Cassie by: Barry Jonsberg

Wait!  Before I get to the book review, I need to update you on recent happenings at the Tucker Free Library.  My name is Kristin and I recently accepted the position of Library Assistant – Children and Youth Services.  On my first day a shipment of new young adult books arrived in the mail.  Among the new arrivals was Barry Jonsberg’s Cassie.  I chose this book to be my first book review for the Teen Blog.  I hope you come into the library soon to check out the other new arrivals!  Okay, on to the review.

Last night, I read Cassie.  I read the entire book in one night! Yes, the entire book!  I am extremely proud of myself.  I cannot begin to express how excited I was to finish a book in just one night.  It just goes to show when you put your mind to something anything is possible.  This is something the main character of Cassie, Holly Holley, had to learn the hard way.  She had her mind set on what she thought she wanted, but it didn’t work out to well.  It took Cassie, Holly’s wheelchair bound cousin to show her what was really important.

Holly Holley had routines.  She had goals.  She had action plans.  She was extremely unhappy.  She thought she was as unhappy as she could get until her aunt and cousin moved in and kicked her out of her room, and routines.  Her life was getting out of control, but she knew what to do.  She would take back control of her life.  She had decided to be friends with Demi, the most popular girl in school, and would do anything to get there, even if it meant stealing.  She would get Raphael McDonald, the cutest boy in town, to notice her, even if he made fun of her.   She had everything she strived for, but during the process she began not to recognize herself.  She didn’t like the person she was becoming.  With each decision her unhappiness increased.

Holly Holley was a girl of action!  When she set her mind to it she got results (something she picked up from Cassie).  Holly watched Cassie overcome obstacles while staying true to herself.  Holly decided to change the situation for the better.  While correcting her mistakes she realized her family and friends were right all along.  Holly learns to not only stand up for herself, but for what is right.  She realized being honest, fair, and considerate were more important than being cool and popular.
